ONTARIO NEWS
It is with great pleasure we announce
that the 2012 OAHI educational conference held
in Niagara Falls, Ontario, March 2nd through
the 4th, was a huge success. Feedback from
the delegates was overwhelmingly positive and
those who were unable to attend missed a truly
exceptional learning opportunity. I would like
to express my sincere thanks to all the Educa-
tion Program Committee, participants, spon-
sors, exhibitors and knowledgeable speakers.
We were thrilled to have special guests CAHPI
National President, Blaine Swan, and CAHPI
Executive Director, Sharry Featherston, pres-
ent for this event. What a superb venue for the
members to meet our National representatives.
The OAHI AGM was held on June 1st, 2012
at the Delta Toronto Airport West, 5444 Dixie
Road, Mississauga, Ontario. We are putting the
finishing touches towards Ontario adopting the
CAHPI Standards of Practice. Ontario inspec-
tors will soon be able to use the Canadian SOP
that has already been accepted by other prov-
inces. Our truly Canadian SOP will be a living
document that can evolve as building methods,
inspection techniques and technologies change.
An exciting accomplishment coming in the near
future is the launch of the new OAHI Website.
Although this has been on the minds of OAHI
members for years, the final creation should be
well worth the wait. There will be many new fea-
tures built into the website that will benefit both
the membership and the Association’s adminis-
tration department.
We are proud to announce that it has been a full
year since the launch of the New Construction
Inspector (NCI) course. Our members have been
busy and we are delighted to announce that
23 members have earned the NCI designation –
congratulations to all of you. This course is var-
ied in its information and usefulness; hence, it is
being made available to others outside the OAHI
family, such as builders, appraisers and realtors.
It is important to note however that the NCI des-
ignation will only be granted to participants who
have met the requirements for this designation.
With all administrative staff now under one roof,
your Board of Directors encourages ALL mem-
bers to assist with the growth of our Associa-
tion, both provincially and nationally. Our mem-
bership based association needs to grow and
provide guidance to legislative authorities as the
home inspection industry evolves. We need to
act like the leaders we are.
In this regard, OAHI is working with provincial
authorities to clarify the application of the rules
on the interprovincial mobility of labour. CAHPI
members must accept qualified members from
other provinces under an agreement signed by
provincial premiers in 2010, but the effect of
mandatory licensing in BC and Alberta by which
inspectors must be accepted by other provinces
is confusing and significant. We will update
readers on our experience going forward.

ATLANTIC NEWS
Our association held its first
meeting of the year with the
new executive.
National President, Blaine Swan has been very
busy in his new role. He recently travelled to
Newfoundland to meet with the local member-
ship as well as government officials regarding our
request for support of our goal for self regulation
of home inspectors.
Newly elected President Brian Hutchinson’s
stated goal is to improve our committee pro-
cesses and is encouraging greater participation
from the membership. As we grow, the work load
increases and several members have stepped
forward to accept new challenges from various
committees: Certification Board, Discipline Com-
mittee, Public Relations, Political Action, Educa-
tion, Events, and Finance/ Budget Committee.
Here is an important reminder to all members of
by-law Section 4.4.4:
An Associate member who
does not qualify for, or advance to, the next level
of membership status (Registered Member) within
five (5) years of becoming an Associate Mem-
ber will automatically cease to be an Associate
Member. The affected person may re-apply for
membership in the Association (as a new Stu-
dent Member) at that time, subject to meeting the
entrance requirements in place at such time.”
The Self Regulation project is on hold pending our
Accreditation application.
