PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
6
T H E C A N A D I A N
HOME INSPECTOR
L
ast year, I posed some simple yet rel-
evant questions to myself and others:
Q:
Who are we and what do we profess to do?
A:
We are professionals and we protect consumers.
Q:
What do consumers want?
A:
Consumers want and deserve honest and competent inspectors.
Q:
How do we as an association of like-minded professionals fulfill the con-
sumer’s needs?
A:
We must do competency evaluation. We do this by requiring our mem-
bers to write recognized knowledge exams like the NHIE, by requiring our
members to be tested under field conditions (ie. TIPR), and by verifying the
quality of our members’ reports. We should require our members to renew
their accreditation on a regular basis. This becomes our product.
Q:
What does our product do for our industry partners?
A:
Our product (competency) now takes on the form of consistency.
Q:
What do our industry partners want?
A:
Consistency. During the numerous conversations I have had with real
estate professionals, I have been repeatedly told that they just want to know
what to expect when inspectors are performing their job.
Q:
What do our members want?
A:
Recognition. This can only be achieved by striving to have our profes-
sion, designation and our association recognized by government, industry
partners and of course, the general public. When we promote our associa-
tion we are promoting ourselves. We become compatriots instead of com-
petitors. We become professionals instead of tradesmen. We work with
consistency and not haphazardly.
Financial rewards. Gains can be made by opening doors to new opportuni-
ties. This is what we are doing on a continuing basis.
Education. This is a critically important element which prepares our mem-
bers for competency evaluation.
Accessible information. The on-line technical library is under development.
We are implementing a broadcast email program, the newsletter will be
sent on a regular basis and will keep members informed of the associations
activities.
On a more personal note, I am eight months into my first year as CAHPI
President. I am hearing very encouraging dialogue from all parts of Canada
including Québec. We all recognize that laws and regulations are differ-
ent in Québec. However, we also recognize that occupational standards,
code of ethics and mission goals are the same. We are finally putting the
past behind us and moving our association and profession forward. Anyone
who knows me even a little will recognize the passion I have for the home
inspection profession. But, I am only one of your peers. I encourage all of
you to get involved in your association. This big ship only moves when we all
pull together in the same direction.
Thank you my friends,
Blaine Swan, RHI
President, CAHPI National
